Research Boosts Sugarcane Business
Sugarcane has been an integral part of the Louisiana economy and culture for more than 210 years. When the Jesuit priests first brought sugarcane to Louisiana in 1751, little did they know that they were laying the foundation for an industry that now contributes $2 billion to the Louisiana economy. The industry could not be sustained, however, without LSU AgCenter research.

The History of the Sugar Research Station
The Sugar Station is the oldest of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Stations. Founded in 1885, its primary function has been to generate and develop new sugarcane varieties.

The Louisiana Agriclimatic Information System (LAIS) collects, processes and distributes detailed climatic data relevant to agricultural production, natural resource management, environmental protection and public safety.
