Pecan Orchard Floor Management
The information contained in this article was presented at the LSU Pecan Research Station as part of the program of the Louisiana Pecan Growers Association Annual Conference held in Shreveport, LA on June 15-16, 2006. Demonstration plots of many of the herbicides were shown to participants and general information about each herbicide discussed. A general overview of pecan orchard floor management is given and herbicides labeled for use in pecan orchards are listed by site activity.

Deadline extended to Sept. 30 for agriculture disaster assistance waiver
(Distributed 09/17/08) The deadline has been extended to Sept. 30 for farmers who need waivers from the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to qualify for federal disaster insurance to help cover their losses from hurricanes Gustav and Ike. “The deadline had been Sept. 16, but because some of the FSA offices were without power because of the hurricanes, the deadline was extended a couple of weeks,” said Dr. Kurt Guidry, LSU AgCenter agricultural economist.

Insecticides for controlling black pecan aphids, stinkbugs, leaf-footed bugs, hickory shuckworm and pecan weevil are listed. There is also information on tree care for those who have experienced high winds. A survey of damage from Hurricane Gustav is included and also information on disaster assistance as covered in the 2008 Farm Bill.
