(Distributed 08/11/10) A hot and wetter-than-normal summer has lead to an increase in the major disease problem on crape myrtles in south Louisiana, says LSU AgCenter horticulturist Allen Owings.
LSU AgCenter set to announce first Louisiana Super Plants
(Distributed 08/10/10) The LSU AgCenter will unveil the first of a series of Louisiana Super Plants in October, according to Regina Bracy, resident coordinator at the AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station.

Nontarget Losses of Granular Herbicide Applied to Container-grown Ornamentals
Application of herbicides formulated on granular carriers is a common practice in container nurseries. Depending on the container arrangement and plant species, a high percentage of the material applied may not be retained in the containers - particularly when the material is applied with a broadcast rotary spreader, as is a common practice.
New Woody Ornamental Shrubs for Louisiana Landscapes
Every year plant breeders introduce new shrubs for landscape use. At the same time, people are just starting to plant a few shrubs introduced in earlier years. The LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station evaluates landscape performance of many new ornamental plants, including flowering shrubs.
New Liriope and Monkey Grass Groundcover Varieties for Louisiana
Groundcovers continue to be popular landscape plants in the southeastern United States. The two most popular ground covers in Louisiana are liriope and monkey grass (also called mondograss). Monkey grass is closely related to liriope.

Top 10 Caladiums Rated from 2009 Caladium Variety Trial
A total of 38 caladium varieties were evaluated at the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station during the summer of 2009 for their landscape performance, including foliage color, fullness and plant uniformity. The top 10 performers are presented here. (Caladium tubers were donated by Classic Caladiums and Happiness Farms.)
Phenology Sequence of Flowering Woody Ornamentals Documented to Assist Landscape Pest Management
A phenology research garden was planted in fall 2007 at the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station in Hammond, La. Data collected in 2008 indicated that a sequence of phonological events in advance of pest activities is available from 15 ornamental plants for predicting landscape pest activity.
